Job Description

The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Communications System Technician.

General Description
Performs skilled technical work in the configuration, installation, and maintenance of new and existing public safety and/or local government two-way radio communications systems, and other government related radio frequency (RF) networks. Works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.  


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Requires two (2) years of higher-level education from an accredited trade, technical or vocational school, college or university with major coursework in electrical or computer engineering, RF theory, and working experience with public safety two-way radio communications networks and systems.  

(One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education)

Special Certifications and Licenses
Possess and maintain of proof of eligibility to obtain basic FCIC/NCIC (Florida/National Crime Information Center) certification.
Possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E Driver's License.

 


Preferences

  • HAM Radio (Amateur Radio) Operator's license preferred.
  • General Radiotelephone Operator license (GROL) preferred.

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

  • Repair, maintenance, programming, and installation of base station/mobile and portable radios, repeaters, system controllers, and radio dispatch consoles.
  • Design, build, and update radio templates and code plugs.
  • Program code plugs into various types of public safety radio/radio equipment using dedicated vendor programming software.
  • Maintain database of radio equipment inventory and radio parts inventory.
  • Program, test, and repair alphanumeric pagers and paging repeaters and controllers.
  • Install, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot fire alerting repeaters and controllers at fire stations.
  • Install, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot simulcast, multicast, conventional, and digital mobile radio (DMR) radio systems.
  • Perform plan reviews, site surveys and on-site inspections for BDA (Bi-Directional Amplifier) DAS (Distributed Antenna Systems) throughout Broward County.
Travel throughout Broward County to provide radio communications related services. This includes but not limited to Regional Dispatch Centers, tower site locations, BDA/DAS survey and inspection sites and other Government facilities. Inspect and maintain tower site facilities and external grounds monthly, or as requested. Provide support and access to authorized vendors, to all Broward County radio facilities. Working experience with generators, UPS, and fire suppression systems. Accept service and repair requests from customers via walk-in and phone calls. Manage assignments through work ticket system or other method of tracking work assignment. Ensures assigned computers are operating on the latest versions of radio programming software. Work independently and efficiently on assignments, manage time efficiently, have excellent oral and written communication and customer service skills. Manage multiple work assignments.
