Job Description and Duties

Under general supervision of the Information Technology Manager I (ITM I) the Information Technology Associate (ITA) is assigned as an Digital Forensic Associate in the Office of Digital Investigations (ODI). In the capacity of DFA, the Information Technology Associate (ITA) performs a variety of well-defined procedures in order to find and preserve electronically stored information (ESI) in support of investigations and litigation. Occasionally, the Information Technology Associate (ITA) is required to apply innovative problem-solving to overcome problems.  The Information Technology Associate (ITA) performs tasks in the Digital Evidence (DE) lifecycle including intake, chain of custody, preservation, security, integrity, return and reporting. The Information Technology Associate (ITA) will conduct digital forensic activities of a defined scope, utilizing tools and applications including, but not limited to, Encase, FTK, Cellebrite, XRY, WinHex, and WinFE.

Information Technology Associate (ITA) tasks relate to ODI’s digital investigations mission to preserve and enhance the safety and security of California’s citizens by providing justice agencies with best-in-class information technology incident response, digital investigations and forensically sound preservation, acquisition, and analysis of electronic data.

Working Conditions

In a remote work environment, home office, or similar environment in California. At the office, an enclosed windowed office with a smoke-free environment. May be required to sit at a computer terminal while performing research and other duties up to eight hours a day. Travel to designated offices may be required.

This position is designated for telework under Government Code section 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California and may require reporting to headquarters or field offices and facilities to fulfill operational needs.  All telework schedules are subject to change and may be reevaluated at any time. Telework does not change the terms and conditions of employment, the essential functions of the job duties, or required compliance with the Department of Justice policies.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Ability to exhibit analytical, writing, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience or familiarity with X1 Social Discovery, Encase, FTK, Cellebrite Physical Analyzer or other forensic software.
  • Ability to learn concepts and practices for capturing and processing digital forensic data and Electronically Stored Information (ESI).
  • Ability to learn Electronically Stored Information (ESI) concepts and software used to analyze ESI data. (i.e. Relativity, Concordance, etc.)
  • Knowledge of network concepts.
  • Knowledge of data storage, backup, types of backups and recovery concepts and tools.
  • Knowledge of basic physical computer components and architectures, including the functions of various components and peripherals (e.g., CPUs, Network Interface Cards, data storage).
  • Ability to learn steps required for the correct documentation of collecting, seizing and preserving digital evidence, such as chain of custody.
  • Competence in basic data structure (e.g., formatting, parsing, languages).
  • Familiarity with non-decade numbering systems.
  • Ability to learn preserving evidence integrity according to standard operating procedures per national standards.
  • Skill in using virtual machines. (e.g., Microsoft Hyper-V, VMWare vSphere, Citrix XenDesktop/Server, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, etc.).  
  • Ability to understand various operating systems and concepts.
  • Ability to learn new concepts, procedures and practices in a culture of constant research and discovery.
  • Ability to be thorough and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines and service levels.
